Toshiba Portege R700-1F7 Laptop review

The Toshiba Portege R700-1F7 has plenty of power with an Intel Core i5-M560 processor running at 2.67GHz, supported with Windows 7 Professional 32bit and 4GB of RAM. It’s not surprising, then, that it scored 117 in WorldBench 6 – streets ahead of its competitors in our recent ultraportable laptops group test.

The Toshiba Portege R700-1F7’s black, brushed-metal finish is smart and the well-spaced keyboard is a definite aid to accurate typing. The screen is non-reflective and while this might not give the deepest, richest colours for video, it is usable in almost any situation.

When you start up the Portege R700, you’ll be greeted by a barrage of messages asking you to set up this, what you want to do about that – it’s quite overwhelming actually. There are several useful utilities installed on the Portege but being bombarded like this is an annoyance.
Laptop Advisor

Of the useful utilities, there’s a fingerprint recognition program that allows you to swipe your finger along a scanner between the trackpad buttons, to log on to the computer; or use it to sign into online services. There’s also a facial recognition program so you don’t have to bother with passwords – simply let the camera scan your face and you’re in.

There’s an HDD protection utility installed that puts the head of the hard drive into a ’safe’ position whenever it detects vibration. This boon is nothing new, although we did find it to be incredibly sensitive, kicking in when the laptop was moved even a fraction. In fact, a number of times it initiated when the laptop was sitting untouched on the testbench in the PCA labs. The battery was a disappointment[indolaptops.com]

Toshiba Portege R700-S1310 Laptops Specs

Toshiba has unboxed its new Laptop model Toshiba Portege R700-S1310. It features Protect and Fix with hard drive protection designed to help protect your laptop and its data in the case of a fall.

The Toshiba Portege R700-S1310 laptop includes 13 inches of wide screen display and an HDMI port, so you can watch high-definition movies on the big screen – right from your laptop. You can video-chat with friends and family around the world with a convenient built-in webcam and microphone.Resilient design
As well as being thin and light, the chassis is incredibly tough. Only the lid feels flimsy, but is in fact designed to flex under pressure, reducing the risk of cracking.

The 13.3-inch screen uses transflective LED screen technology for optimum visibility indoors and out, and the panel provides great colour and contrast.

Usability is less impressive, although this could be a result of our pre-production test machine, with the isolated-style keyboard proving one of the spongiest we've used.

To keep the chassis as light as possible, a 128GB Solid State Drive (SSD) has been used rather than a standard 2.5-inch hard drive. While SSDs are less prone to data loss caused by knocks and bumps and also provide very fast access to your data, the limited storage space is an unfortunate trade-off.

More pleasing is the fact that Toshiba has managed to squeeze a DVD rewriter into such a small laptop, for read/write access to CDs and DVDs.

Connectivity is also top-notch, courtesy of 802.11n Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet. There's also a 3G module for wireless broadband access.

Even at this pre-production stage, we're very impressed by the Portege R700. While there are a few minor niggles, we're confident they will all be resolved for mass-production and this is sure to be a big winner for Toshiba.Toshiba Portege R700-S1310 Specifications:

* 13.3 inches of wide screen display
* 12.4 in x 8.9 in x 1 in Dimensions and Weight 3.2 lbs.
* Intel Core i3-350M (2.26GHz) processor
* Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (32/64 bits) XP Professional downgrade
