Falcon Northwest FragBook DRX Gaming Laptop with Intel Core i7 950 CPU

Falcon Northwest FragBook DRX
Falcon Northwest has always been known for incredible paint jobs on their gaming systems. The Fragbook DRX is a 17-inch desktop replacement that can be configured with virtually any paint color or a custom design (for a fee). At $3,433, this large notebook is powerful but at a very high price. Part of the large expense is due to the high performance desktop processor used in the DRX. Equipped with a quad-core Intel Core i7 950 CPU, the DRX runs at 3.06GHz. While there is no doubt that this processor is extremely powerful, one has to wonder if this chip is necessary when Sandy Bridge processors are now on the market. It would be nice to see an option for the Intel Core i7-2600K for a much lower price. Undoubtedly, what you're paying for is the ability to run this full desktop processor in a laptop chassis.
new Falcon Northwest FragBook DRX
As mentioned above, the DRX can be personalized with close to any color. Whether you're looking to match your laptop to your sports car or simply wish to make a bold statement, Falcon Northwest can make it happen. And while it's pretty darn cool to be able to have such a personalized piece of equipment, the overall cost of the machine is a drawback due to its midrange components. By midrange, I mean the graphics card, memory, and hard drive are merely average. The Falcon DRX 17-inch notebook is equipped with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1.5GB GDDR5 graphics card. It's a great card, but it is way too dated for a laptop of this caliber. For nearly $3,500, it's expected to have a high-end AMD Radeon HD 6970M, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M, or a dual card setup. The same holds true for memory. The machine comes with 6GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM for $3,433. To upgrade to 12GB is $198 more, which would be quite reasonable if the starting price wasn't so high. Hard drive storage space is also below average with a 320GB 7200RPM drive. And yes, an upgrade to a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive is under $55, but many laptops under $1,000 offer the same amount of storage space, which makes the Falcon Northwest DRX a below average value.
top Falcon Northwest FragBook DRX
Overall, if you simply have to have a custom paint job to make your laptop stand out, Falcon Northwest is a viable option. However, the components in the DRX are too outdated to make it warrant the hefty price tag. The standout features are the powerful desktop processor and top-notch paint job.

Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop Review

Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78

Toshiba's Qosmio laptop line has been around since 2004, and the 2011 launch of the X775-3DV78 features a 3D-capable 17.3 inch model. The Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 is the high-end system in this new Qosmio X770-series lineup with a retail price of $1,899. The notebook sports a quad-core Intel Core i7-2630QM processor for added speed in tasks such as video editing. The Core i7-2630QM CPU offers a base clock speed of 2.0GHz with TurboBoost functionality up to 2.9GHz. The chip also has 6MB of L3 cache.best Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78The Qosmio X775-3DV78 is equipped with 8GB of DDR3 1333MHz memory, which offers flexibility in multitasking and memory-intensive applications, such as Adobe Photoshop. The overall design of the system is a continuation of Toshiba's typical black and red color scheme with a red backlit keyboard and Fusion X2 finish that does offer a more subdued feel compared to previous generations. The starting weight of the Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 is 7.75 pounds, and the system comes with an 8-cell battery. Since it is a 17.3 inch laptop that can be used as a desktop replacement, portability isn't the name of the game. Instead, the Qosmio X775-3DV78 features high performance components that are perfect for PC gaming.
Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 gaming laptop

Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 Gaming Laptop Specification :

  • Intel Core i7-2630QM Processor
  • 8GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory
  • 17.3 Inch 1920x1080 3D Ready Display
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 Video Card
  • 500GB Hybrid Drive + 750GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
  • NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit
  • Blu-ray Drive
  • Memory Card Reader
  • Harmon/Kardon Speakers
  • 1 USB 3.0 Port, HDMI, Bluetooth
  • 8 Cell Battery
  • 7.75 Pound Starting Weight

And luckily that includes a 1920x1080 16:9 widescreen display that is 3D ready. The laptop comes with an NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit, which includes a pair of active shutter glasses, so you are on your way to an immersive 3D experience. The 3D Vision IR emitter is embedded in the display, so you don't have to worry about an additional adapter. And while 3D gaming may not be well liked by all, it is nice to have the option as more and more games are 3D-ready and 3D Blu-ray movies are also on the market. Speaking of Blu-ray HD content, the Qosmio X775-3DV78 is equipped with a Blu-ray drive, which is a nice feature to have since the display supports 1080p video.

But in order to have a great gaming experience, graphics must also be up to par. The Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 boasts an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M graphics card with 1.5GB of GDDR5 video RAM and, of course, support for 3D Vision. This card was recently announced by NVIDIA at the end of May, and specifications include 192 CUDA cores, a 1550MHz processor clock, and DirectX 11 support. Overall, the GeForce GTX 560M is a high performance mobile card that is capable of running the latest games.

Toshiba has also upped the ante with a dual hard disk configuration featuring a 500GB hybrid hard drive and a 750GB 5400RPM drive. You can use the hybrid hard drive for your OS to improve boot times and save additional data on the 750GB drive. This offers a more affordable solution that is quick but not nearly as expensive as investing in a spacious full-on solid state drive.new Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78

One downside to the X775-3DV78 is the layout of the ports. The USB ports are on the lower right hand side of the notebook, which can be a pain when you plug in a mouse for gaming. The system is equipped with Bluetooth and an HDMI port, but for those who use a SmartCard to connect to work, you'll find the lack of a built-in SmartCard reader to be disappointing.

Overall, the Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 is a decent value with a 1080p 17.3-inch display that is capable of 3D gaming. Having a hybrid hard drive is a nice touch, and 8GB of RAM makes tasks other than gaming run smooth, too. On top of that, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M 1.5GB video card is a new card that offers support for CUDA and PhysX. In conclusion, the Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 is a fast machine, but be aware you are paying for 3D capability.[compreviews.about.com]

Asus G53sw A1 / 17.3-inch Gaming Laptop Review

Asus G53sw A1 / 17.3-inch Gaming Laptop Review
ASUS has shrunk down its popular 17.3-inch G73 gaming notebook into a more manageable 15.6-inch size with the introduction of its G53SW. Is this travel-friendly gaming laptop as impressive as its bigger brother? We find out.

The G53 packs a punch, especially with the second-generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 8GB of RAM, and its powerful Nvidia GTX 460M graphics card with a whopping 1.5GB of its own memory. The two-year warranty with one year of accidental damage protection is also worth noting; most competitors do not offer this kind of coverage standard.

Build and Design
The G53SW is essentially a shrunken version of ASUS’ larger and extremely popular 17.3-inch G73JH and G73JW gaming notebooks. The notebook’s design imitates a stealth bomber aircraft, especially the rear with its recessed and upward-angled cooling exhaust ports. The G53SW is quite unique; the only notebooks that likely get more attention from onlookers are Alienware laptops.

Most of the G53SW’s touchable surfaces are covered in a rubber finish, which feels great and adds to the long-term durability. The notebook is appreciably absent of glossy plastic. The G53SW is constructed entirely of plastic. The plastic is reasonably thick and does not make a cheap sound when tapped by a fingernail. The chassis is acceptably stiff but can be flexed by twisting the corners. The areas around the chassis are solid though cave in slightly under pressure.

The lid is attached the chassis via one large hinge. It is possible to open the lid with one hand. The lid flexes rather easily; additionally, the hinge could be a bit more supportive since the display can move around a bit. I also wish the display tilted back further. Fit and finish is good; there are no rough or unfinished edges. The overall build quality is above average; the lid could be sturdier, but otherwise there are no concerns.

Upgrading the G53SW is possible but not easy. Accessing the RAM and hard drive requires removing the keyboard, the palm rest, and several screws; then the bottom panel will pop off. The G53SW actually has two hard drive bays, though most configurations only come with a single drive.

Ports and Features
The G53SW has an average amount of ports for a 15.6-inch notebook; a larger variety would be appreciated. It lacks an ExpressCard slot and eSATA. All picture descriptions are left to right.Asus G53sw A1 / 17.3-inch Gaming Laptop Review ASUS G53SW-A1 specifications:

  • 15.6-inch 1080p (1920×1080) glossy panel with LED backlighting

MSI GX780 Sexy Gaming Notebook Review

MSI GX780 Sexy Gaming Notebook Review
MSI have introduced their latest dedicated gaming laptop, the GX780. This 17.3 inch notebook comes with a quad-core Intel i7 processor with Turbo drive, Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics, and one of the flashiest looking keyboards you will ever see.

The MSI GX780 is a power house notebook in every way you can imagine. Some of its most impressive features are a full HD (1080p) display, up to 16GB of RAM, and dual hard drive bays. You also get access to a USB 3.0 port, HD 720p webcam, and custom Dynaudio speakers with THX TruStudio Pro surround sound.

The 17.3-inch display works with a Nvidia GeForce GT 555M video card with 1GB GDDR5 memory, and provides support for Nvidia 3D vision. The GX780 is fully compatible with DX11, which provides all the advantages of the latest drawing standards.

However, by far the most noticeable feature in the MSI GX780 – and the one getting the most attention from the marketing department – is the SteelSeries-designed keyboard. This keyboard has backlighting that comes courtesy of 30 LEDs, with up to 1,000 colour combinations possible. Make no mistake, the design of this keyboard is full-force, 100% gaming-bling like you have never seen before.

The full colour backlighting operates in five scenario modes: normal mode, gaming mode, breathing mode, wave mode, and dual colour mode. The last three modes feature moving, alternating LED effects, and all five modes are customisable in terms of colour selection. After you have played on this computer, you will probably never look at a QWERTY keyboard in the same way again.

MSI are advertising the GX780 as having an “aerodynamics design”. “The exterior design of the GX780 combines the classic, succinct appearance of a limousine with the aerodynamic contour of a spacecraft creating a low-key composure but powerful image.” This is a serious – although very fun looking – computer, which is sure to delight all the gamers out there who can afford it. Release data and price are not yet available.

New Alienware Area 51-m5550 Gaming Laptop

New Alienware Area 51-m5550 Gaming Laptop
If you’re looking for top-notch performance, higher-end A/V connections, and futuristic design, the Alienware Area-51 m5550 delivers. However, if its terrible battery life, incomplete set of multimedia features, and high price sour the deal for you, keep on looking.

With its silver coloring, black accents, and glowing alien-head ornament, the m5550 looks way cooler than your typical mainstream notebook. The firm lid and scratch-resistant case give it a sturdy overall bearing. Measuring 14.3 x 10.7 x 1.9 inches, it’s not bad for its size at 6.8 pounds, though too bulky for regular travel.

The m5550’s translucent keyboard is quiet and comfortable to use except for a sinfully short spacebar that slowed our typing at first. The responsive touchpad and mouse buttons are of adequate size, however, and the touchpad features vertical and horizontal scrolling zones for speedier Web page and document navigation; we also like the external touchpad on/off button that lets you prevent unintentional cursor movement when using an external mouse.

The 15.4-inch widescreen display serves up crisp, vivid colors and images, and the WXGA native resolution, average for a display this size, offers a nice balance of readability and screen real estate. (Upgrading to a finer WUXGA panel adds $100 to the price tag—-a worthwhile investment for graphics pros.) We appreciate the external volume control wheel, and the two stereo speakers deliver clear audio, though they don’t crank as loud as we’d like.

The m5550 accommodates some deluxe connections: Besides three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, S-Video, an ExpressCard slot, and a 4-in-1 card reader, you get a DVI output, for connecting digitally to an external display, and an optical audio port. Also onboard are Ethernet and modem ports, and there’s a handy Wi-Fi on/off switch.

Pricey for a mainstream notebook, the $2,429 m5550 we tested came equipped with a top-shelf processor, Intel’s 2.33-GHz Core 2 Duo T7600, which turned in a simply blazing MobileMark 2005 score of 279. Unfortunately, with high performance came high temperature: The m5550 ran quite hot, particularly on either side of the touchpad, which resulted in sweaty wrists during extended typing sessions. Unless you routinely work with demanding video-editing software, we recommend configuring the m5550 with a lower-end processor; it’ll generate less heat, extend your battery life, and save you hundreds of dollars, without sacrificing that much speed.

Powered by Nvidia’s mid-tier 256MB GeForce Go 7600 graphics card, the m5550 notched an impressive 3DMark03 score of 8,235. Gaming performance, on the other hand, was less spectacular: The m5550 turned in only 37 fps on our F.E.A.R. gaming benchmark (with settings on autodetect)—-not terrible, but insufficient for hardcore gaming.

For all of its processing muscle, the m5550 fails to live up to its multimedia potential: You get Windows XP Media Center 2005, but no TV tuner option to let you record programs to the 100GB hard drive; an IR port, but no remote; and no external controls for the dual-layer DVD drive. The included software package is similarly modest: Aside from the OS, there are two disc-burning apps—and that’s it.

In our battery drain tests, the m5550’s 6-cell lasted a meager 1 hour and 47 minutes whether the wireless connection was on or off—at least an hour and a half less than most mainstream models. The m5550’s Wi-Fi reception wasn’t particularly great, either; we detected an average throughput of 7.3 Mbps from 15 feet and 6.9 Mbps from 50 feet.

If you’re looking for superior processing performance at any cost, the Alienware Area-51 m5550 certainly screams. However, there are plenty of other, more balanced models on the market.

Price: $2,429

Digital Storm's New xm15 Gaming Laptop

Digital Storm's New xm15 Gaming Laptop
Digital Storm has just announced their newest product, the xm15, a powerful new lightweight laptop based on NVIDIA's Optimus Hybrid Technology. The xm15 is a different kind of laptop that delivers targeted, extreme performance when you need it so you will always enjoy longer operation without losing the ability to enjoy the visual intensity of HD movies, multimedia applications, web surfing and gaming.

This laptop delivers high graphics for a variety of multimedia content due to NVIDIA's powerful GT 425M 1GB video card. By utilizing NVIDIA's Optimus Hybrid technology, this laptop can defer operation to a second separate integrated Intel graphics processor for less intensive applications. This switch happens automatically and seamlessly meaning that there is no interruption in operation.

By increasing and decreasing performance whenever necessary, the xm15 is able to extend battery life exponentially. The powerful video card in this device makes it not surprising at all that the xm15 has a 1080p HD LED screen that is capable of producing some truly incredible images.

The xm15 puts your benchmark tests to shame as well. It routinely scores above 7200 on 3DMark06 which puts it in the upper levels of laptop performance. Thanks to a built-in light speed eSATA and USB 3.0 transfer ports, you will never have to be tethered to stagnant bulk data. In addition to that, the xm15 comes with a built-in HDMI and VGA outputs, which means it can be taken anywhere and displayed everywhere.

According to Rajeev Kuruppu, Digital Storm's Director of Product Development, "The power demands of high performance laptops have always put a strain on battery life. With the development of NVIDIA's Optimus Hybrid Technology, we're finally able to design an affordable laptop that can handle graphics intensive applications. Our xm15 is the ideal solution for customers who want to consume graphically rich multimedia content, game or just browse the internet...it's truly a hybrid in every definition of the word."

Full specs of the xm15 consist of a 2.4GHz Core i5-520M, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 320GB HDD and NVIDIA's 425M 1GB graphics card for a base rate of $999. You can also increase your build to have a 2.53GHz Core i5-540M for $1,086 or a 2.8GHz Core i7-640M for $1,367.

New Laptops In 2011 : When we talk about games there’s no such thing as compromise, a true gamer needs only the best possible combination of components in order to top the other players. Long gone are the days of single player campaign games, the multiplayer mode is where a gamer test its skill against other players. iBuyPower released the Battalion 101 X8100 gaming laptop based on a market growth of gaming laptops. They are becoming more and more desired compared with standard desktops, because they can pack the performance, are silent and easier to transport (to a LAN party for instance) even though they tend to be a bit more expensive.

Medion Erazer MD 97623 Gaming Laptop Review

Medion Erazer MD 97623 Gaming Laptop Review
Medion’s Erazer series of computers is designed for games-players, with a range of laptops and desktop computers available.

We’re not sure why it is that companies producing games computers decide they have to be outlandishly designed and named, but that’s certainly the case here.

Apart from the silly name, the Erazer X6811 we are reviewing has a tough-looking plastic case and, inside, an oddly shaped screen bezel that surrounds the good 15.6 inch display. It’s available exclusively from Medion direct.

There are several X6811 models available, and the one we’re looking at, model number MD 97623 has an Intel Core i5-460M processor with 4GB of memory. It has an Nvidia Geforce GTX460M graphics card which has 1,536MB of its own memory.

There’s a 640GB hard disk which is enough to store plenty of music, video and games, as well as a DVD drive that will read and create all CDs and DVDs but not newer Blu-ray discs.

The combination of the processor and graphics card are enough to justify Medion’s categorisation of this as a gaming laptop.

It scored very well in our games tests and although it did less impressively in the DVD copying test, which simulates a processor-intensive real-world task of copying and compressing a DVD movie, it did as well as we would expect from any laptop at this price. Some games will still need to have the detail settings turned down, but it’s enough for decent performance in most titles.

Medion describes the laptop’s keyboard as ‘gaming optimised’ which in practice means that the W, A, S and D keys have red and white arrows printed on them to remind the player that those keys are usually used for movement. Likewise for 2, 4, 6 and 8 on the numeric keypad.

Medion has done well to squeeze the keypad in, though, and it’s something that players of flight simulators, among others, will appreciate, as those keys are frequently used for in-game functions. The keyboard itself, though shallow (keys don’t travel far when pressed), was comfortable enough, and the keys were well-spaced to avoid hitting the wrong ones.

The touchpad could have been bigger. It’s described as being ‘multi-touch’ so you can use a pinching motion with two fingers to zoom out of a document, for instance, but we couldn’t get any such gestures to work, and nor was there an option to enable them.

Though the speakers mounted at the top of the keyboard are small, they produced good sound, capable of reaching reasonable volumes without distorting. However, as with all small speakers, the sound lacked depth in both low bass and mid-range, leading to a very slight tinniness.

It has connections for headphones, microphone and surround sound, as well as a memory card reader, VGA socket for attaching a monitor, HDMI for a flat-panel TV and an Express Card expansion slot.

There are two USB2 sockets and two that use the faster USB3 standard (though USB2 devices can be attached too), and it can connect to wired and wireless networks and Bluetooth devices. A webcam with microphone is mounted into the top of the screen.

The Erazer MD 97623 comes with the 64-bit edition of the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system, along with Microsoft Office 2010 Starter. It’s not particularly portable at 3.3kg, has a battery life of under two hours in a fairly intensive test, and although the case looks tough it’s not actually shockproof.

There’s also an enormous power supply ‘brick’ which supplies the 150W required – quite a lot for a laptop. Cleverly, though, the case is large enough to include a spare hard disk slot so you can expand the storage capacity without replacing the existing disk.

This Erazer model combines good storage with impressive gaming power, making it good for players who don’t want a full desktop computer.
